PMTNM celebrates its certified teachers. MTNA certification (NCTM - Nationally Certified Teacher of Music) is a mark of excellence and professional commitment. Certified teachers have demonstrated exceptional teaching abilities and maintain high professional standards.
What MTNA Certification Means
The MTNA Professional Certification Program exists to improve the level of professionalism within the field of music teaching. It benefits both music teaching professionals and the public who interact with them.

Certification helps you readily identify competent music teachers in your community. Certified teachers have proven their expertise through rigorous evaluation.
⭐ Five Standards
The program is based on five standards defining what a competent music teacher should know and be able to do. All standards must be met to earn certification.
🏆 NCTM Designation
Upon fulfillment of all standards, teachers are granted the MTNA Professional Certification credential with the designation Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM).
The Five Standards of MTNA Certification
MTNA certification is based on five comprehensive standards that define what a competent music teacher should know and be able to do. All standards must be successfully met to earn the NCTM credential:
- Professional Preparation: Demonstrated knowledge of music theory, history, and performance practices
- Professional Teaching Practices: Effective pedagogical methods and curriculum development
- Professional Business Practices: Ethical studio management and professional conduct
- Professionalism and Partnerships: Active engagement in professional development and community involvement
- Professional Responsibility: Commitment to student growth and the advancement of music education
These standards ensure that certified teachers maintain the highest levels of professional competence and ethical practice.
How to Verify Certification
Always verify if your prospective teacher is certified through the official MTNA Directory. Certification status is also indicated in the PMTNM Membership Roster by NCTM after the teacher's name.
